Frequently Asked Questions

Oftentimes, many people have the same questions when they call or email us, so here are the answers. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to answer and help you move forward and meet your needs.

What will the therapy process look like?

Every therapy journey is unique — just like you. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and we would tailor our work to reflect your individual needs, experiences, and goals. In our first session, we’ll begin building a strong therapeutic relationship. I may ask questions to better understand different areas of your life, and I encourage you to ask me anything you’re curious about, too. If there’s ever a topic you’re not ready to talk about, just let me know — we can skip it and return to it later if and when you feel comfortable.

What should I know before my first session?

Getting Ready for Your First Session

To help us start off smoothly, here are a few things to take care of before we meet:

  • Complete your intake form: Please fill out the intake form sent to your email before your session. This gives me a chance to review your information ahead of time so we can make the most of our time together.
  • Running late or having trouble finding us? Just send me a quick email or give me a call to let me know.
  • Take a deep breath: Our first session is what I like to call the “getting to know you” session. There’s no pressure to dive into anything heavy right away — we’ll take it at your pace and start building a foundation together.
What is your cancellation policy?

We kindly ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your session. Cancellations made under 24 hours or no-shows will incur a full session fee. We understand that emergencies can happen, so please reach out to us as soon as possible if you find yourself in that situation.

Is psychotherapy covered by insurance?

While OHIP does not cover psychotherapy, many private insurers do. We recommend checking your policy for coverage under “psychotherapy” or “Registered Psychotherapist” to see if you are eligible for reimbursement.

Do you offer direct billing?

Currently, we do not offer direct billing. However, you will receive a receipt after your session, which you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Can I start and stop when I want?

Absolutely — you are in charge of your own journey. I may offer recommendations around session frequency based on your goals and needs, but ultimately, the decision is always yours.

What is a free consultation?

We offer a free 30-minute consultation for anyone who would like to explore therapy before booking a full session. This is a space for you to ask any questions, share what’s bringing you to therapy, and get a sense of whether we’re a good fit to work together. If it feels right for both of us, we can move forward by setting up your profile and booking your first session.

Are my sessions confidential and secure?

Yes, all therapy sessions are confidential, secure, and encrypted using HIPAA-compliant software to ensure your privacy is fully protected.

Are there any exceptions to confidentiality?

Yes. While confidentiality is a fundamental part of the therapeutic relationship, there are specific situations where a psychotherapist is legally required to break confidentiality to ensure safety. These exceptions include:

1. When there is a risk of harm to yourself or others

2. When there is suspected harm or risk to a vulnerable person (e.g., a child, elderly, individual, or someone with a disability)

3. When records or testimony are legally compelled by a court order

Important Note: If confidentiality must be breached, your therapist will make every effort to inform you and provide support throughout the process.

How are payments made?

Payment is processed through RP Psychotherapy's secure online booking platform, OWL, using a credit card. Your card will be added to your profile after your first session and securely stored for future appointments. Payment can also be made by e-transfer.

If preferred, cash is accepted upon request after your session. Please note that exact change may not always be available — in such cases, any difference will be applied as a credit to your account for future use.
